Real estate is a public profession, so most people have some understanding of what agents do on a day to day basis. Client meetings, market research, listing homes, making offers, and helping people navigate the biggest transaction of their lives are all things real estate agents do in front of the public.

But there’s another side to life in real estate—the side most people don’t see. After the showings and the photoshoots, real estate agents get to be alone, and it’s during this alone time that they get to do all the things they need to without anyone watching. Here are ten things real estate agents do when no one is looking:

1. Sneak in a weekend activity on a weekday (when possible)

The beach, the deck, or maybe even a late afternoon cocktail.

2. Search for their own dream home (for once)

It’s okay to be a little selfish sometimes, right?

3. Try to come up with creative new slogans for their real estate signs

“If you list with Jane, your life will never be the same.” How does that sound?

4. Snoop around on their competitors’ websites and social media profiles

It’s okay, everyone does it.

5. Ice their wrist after filling out hundreds of handwritten notes

Staying in touch can be painful.

6. Look for bulk discounts on coffee (and wine)

If you order 1,000 pounds, you can save hundreds…

7. Attempt to meditate but immediately get interrupted by phone calls

Namaste… namaste… nevermind!

8. Go through the car wash very, very often

Can’t show up to listing appointments looking like you just went mudding.

9. Try to remember what life was like before they went into real estate…

A nine-to-five? What the heck is that!?

5 Reasons Why Introverts Make Amazing Real Estate Agents

It’s not a stretch to say that people tend to stereotype various professions. When you think of an accountant, you probably think of someone who dresses conservatively, and has an analytical personality. An artist, on the other hand, is thought of as freewheeling and whimsical, marching to the beat of their own drum.

And, when it comes to real estate agents, many people—because of representations made in movies or pop culture—think of a fast-talking, outgoing extrovert, charming everyone to their heart’s desire.

But this isn’t always the case. In fact, there are quite a few introverts who make their living helping others buy and sell houses, and they’re pretty darn good at it too. Certain qualities introverts have might even give them an advantage when it comes to the business. Here are a few of them:

1. They’re excellent listeners

There’s nothing worse than trying to have a conversation with someone who won’t let you get a word in. And in real estate, someone who doesn’t listen can cost you time and money. That’s why introverts—who tend to be great listeners—are so wonderful to work with. They’ll take the time to understand you and your needs.

2. They understand how important a home is

Introverted personalities don’t spend much time at bars and nightclubs, and instead tend to spend time at home, in a comfortable and familiar place. This gives them a unique appreciation for how important a home really is—an appreciation they will carry into your transaction. Empathy can go a long way, especially when it comes to something as personal as where you live.

3. They pay attention to detail

A real estate transaction can be fraught with details, many of which have serious implications for the parties involved. This is why it’s important to work with someone who takes the time to understand the whole picture rather than just breezing through the fine print. Introverts tend to be more contemplative, and focus on details, which is an asset when dealing with something which has as many moving parts as a real estate transaction.

4. They consider all sides before acting

Empathy is one of the most valuable characteristics a real estate agent can possess. Introverts have an advantage here, and are likely to take the time to consider all sides and perspectives throughout the transaction. This means you can expect compassion and understanding for your situation, and insight into the buyer’s or seller’s situation on the other side as well. If everyone feels understood, then things tend to go more smoothly, and everybody walks away happy.

5. They’re trustworthy

Let’s be honest… have you ever seen an episode of American Greed where the person who swindled money from unsuspecting victims was an introvert? It’s very unlikely. Introverts are selective in how they interact with the world, and they value each and every relationship, rather than viewing people as disposable strangers who come and go. This might mean they’re not always quick to trust, but it also means they take their responsibility to others seriously, and are honest, ethical, and fair. And, at the end of the day, is there anything more important in a real estate transaction than trust?

So, when you’re sizing up a real estate agent to work with, don’t necessarily expect (or want) your agent to be the loud, outgoing type! A more reserved introvert could be the best agent for you to work with. But, you may have to look a little harder to find him or her, because, well, they probably aren’t out there beating their chests and screaming about how great they are…

Whatever it is you do for a living, there are probably things that an outsider would never be able to understand or appreciate.

Deep down, we all want to be appreciated—and real estate agents are no exception. Underneath our name tags and professional attire, agents are regular people just like you. So, while you may not have any idea what it’s like to be an agent, you can totally appreciate what it’s like to feel unappreciated…

So, on behalf of agents everywhere, let’s get into some common misconceptions that cause agents to feel unappreciated, and help you get the most out of your relationship with one.

1. The Internet makes what we do seem easy

For many years, it was practically impossible for a non-agent to access the kind of information readily available on the Internet nowadays. If they were nothing else, they were gatekeepers of information.

The listing sites that have sprung up in the last decade can make it seem like real estate is a simple matter of sellers putting a listing online and then buyers scrolling until they find one they love. Throw in a little paperwork and some negotiation and, voila, a house has been bought and sold.

Price transparency, quick notifications, and effective algorithms might have changed the game when it comes to seeing what’s on the market, but the fundamentals of a transaction have generally remained the same.

This means that while there is more information than ever available to consumers, real estate agents are still responsible for the lion’s share of getting a deal done. So, even though things might seem pretty simple on the surface, the agent’s job hasn’t changed all that much.

In fact, in order to even succeed and last in this business at this point, an agent has to bring more to the table than just being able to provide you with access to listings and the buyer pool.

2. Today’s market can skew perceptions

In many parts of the country, the real estate market is hot, and is being spurred on by low mortgage rates.

That being said, each market is unique, and every client’s situation is different, so there can be a disconnect between what’s happening nationally or on a broad scale, and what’s actually happening locally.

An agent’s perspective will sometimes differ from a client’s, since that agent will have a better understanding of their specific market, and what it takes to sell or buy a home. Sometimes, this perspective might not jive with what people have read in the media, or with their friends’ or coworkers’ situations, which can lead to frustration, or even mistrust.

If this happens, simply ask your agent for clarity, and remember that the real estate market is disparate and varies from one area to the next.

3. A lot of what we do happens behind the scenes

When you’re buying or selling a home, it can feel like the agent’s job is done after they make or receive an offer that gets accepted. It seems like the easiest job in the world, right? In reality, there’s a lot more that goes into it, both before and after an accepted offer.

In fact, the best agents are the ones who make you feel like everything was easy, because they’re doing all of the unpleasant behind-the-scenes stuff and keeping it out of your hair. Negotiations, working out the fine details, dealing with frustrated and difficult people from the other side, legal work, and the inevitable problems that come up during every transaction are just some of the things agents are doing when you’re not looking.

4. People (wrongly) assume we’re all filthy rich

If it was easy to get rich working in real estate, everybody would be doing it. For decades, the myth of the overnight real estate millionaire has convinced people that their agent is living in the lap of luxury while doing little more than making a few calls a day. This misconception can create tension between hardworking clients and their seemingly happy-go-lucky agents.

The truth is much more mundane. It takes years to build a book of business in real estate, and after expenses, broker’s fees, and taxes, most real estate agents are decidedly middle-class income earners. And that’s putting aside the fact that we don’t get a base salary, and only get paid when a deal actually closes.

The myth of the jet-setting real estate agent is just that: a myth.

5. We’re going through the same stress you’re going through

If you’ve ever bought or sold a home, or have been around someone who has, then you know just how stressful and nerve-racking it can be. A real estate transaction is typically the biggest transaction of people’s lives. There are lots of moving parts, lots of money on the line, not to mention the stress that comes with uprooting from one home to another.

And despite what some people think, your real estate agent truly understands how stressful it is, and realizes that the stakes are high. Agents are typically dealing with multiple transactions at the same time, each one of them involving multiple stressed-out people, and we do it over and over again, month in and month out. The stress, of course, comes with the territory, but it’s safe to say that agents are in no way immune from the toll it can take.

Ah, this old chestnut. We get it, you’re really excited to see some houses, and they’re really excited to show them to you! But they just CAN’T before your pre-approval is in. Why’s that? Well, let’s be honest here. You only get 24 hours in a day. The same is true for everyone — even your agent and Beyonce. They don’t want to spend those hours showing you a house you adore… only to find out it’s out of your range (or maybe even way cheaper than what you can afford). So if you ask to see one before you know how much you’re spending, they’ll be really sad, but the answer is…

2. Ask To Look At Houses That Are Out Of Your Price Range

“Oh, look, this one’s just down the road, and I’ve always wanted to see a ten million dollar house. Can we go take a peek? Please? It’ll be fun!” You know what, you’re right. It might be fun. You know what else is fun, though? Going home to your loved ones instead of spending extra hours at the office. Let your agent go home; they’re already drinking 45,297 cups of coffee just to make it through the day as it is.

Oh, and one more thing? By NOT looking at the El Grande Expensivo Mac Daddy houses, you’ll keep your expectations for your own house in line. This means you won’t feel super sad when your new place doesn’t have a dog shower or a gift-wrapping room.

3. Drag Your Feet Every Step Of The Way

OK, buying or selling a house takes a lot of careful consideration, I get that. But the problem is if you take too long in every step of the process, you’re going to miss out on a lot of potential deals. As they say on the playground, if you snooze, you lose.

When your agent says they need a decision on something pretty quick, or some paperwork turned around within a certain timeframe, they’re not being megalomaniacal. They’re really looking out for your best interests, so step lively now, will ya?

4. Decide You Want To Look At Houses 30 Minutes Away (After Three Months Of Looking)

Siiiighhhh… Ok, ok, nothing here is to your liking. That’s understandable. But if it takes you three months to figure that out, though? It’s kind of a brutal blow to the agent who’s been through thick and thin with you these last ninety days or so.

Do yourself and your agent a favor: get a feel for the area quickly by driving around in person, and be realistic about what you will and won’t accept. If you don’t like it on day one, you’re not going to like it on day 89, so pick an area early and stick with it rather than hoping you’ll find something better.

5. Tell Them You Found A Place On Your Own

If you want to know a real estate agent’s true Kryptonite, it’s this one. After all you’ve been through together, to go and step out this way? Why, it’s just unconscionable!

Even if you’ve stumbled across a great little piece of property on your own, your agent is still your best advocate when going through the offer, sale, and closing process. They’ve got your best interests at heart, so don’t be so quick to kick them out of the transaction…you might really (really really REALLY) regret it later.

6. Lowball Like You’re Trying To Steal The Joint

Saving money is important. Making an offer that’s so low it’s insulting, though? That’s just bad business. Not only will both sides have to complete paperwork (ahem, time is a precious resource for all!), you’ll also have to deal with the emotional stress when you’re inevitably denied. So make judicious offers, and keep your agent’s advice in mind.

7. Ask For A Lower Commission (Especially After The Ink Is Dry)

This is a tricky topic. It seems like all agents do is type up a quick listing, spend a few Saturdays showing off your house, then write up a contract when it sells. Why on earth should they make thousands for that? Simple. It’s because they’re a tried-and-true professional AND because there’s SOOOO much more going on behind the scenes that you don’t even hear about. Asking them to lower their commission is like your boss coming in and asking if it’s ok that he pays you less for doing the same job you already do. Seems kinda preposterous when you put it that way, right?

8. Ask For ANYTHING After The Ink Is Dry

Whether you decided you want to keep the curtains after all, or you’ve changed your mind and you don’t want to pay for any repairs, asking for changes (or just assuming you can have them) after the contract is written is a no-go. Your mama may have told you that you’ll never know what you can get until you try, but in this case, it’s better to be really comprehensive about what you want on the front end, because mama’s not in charge here…the long arm of real estate contract law is.

9. Go Behind Their Backs

“Well, I know we have a contract, but I found the listing agent’s phone number and she wrote up the paperwork. Sorry about that!” OUCH. This is perhaps the worst thing you could do to your agent. Listen, they’ve been with you through the blood, sweat, and tears, so stick it out with them through the entire process. They’re your trusted advisor, after all, so you should act in a trustworthy manner, too.
